One of our biggest inspirations in the art world is the work of James Turrell. Turrell was one of the first artists to “paint with light” and his work never ceases to amaze us. We drove an hour last weekend up to Pomona to check out his most recent exhibition at Pomona College…..and it TOOK OUR BREATH AWAY!!
The photo above is of the piece that left us most speechless. Turrell saturates the room with such an
overwhelming soft blue light that you literally forget you are experiencing “light” but rather, you feel as though you have been transported into another dimension. You literally feel and absorb the blue. You are required to take your shoes off and wear surgeon’s booties so that the space isn’t marred and remains clean. It’s an incredible piece to experience. The photo just doesn’t do it justice…You must see it for yourself.
Alongside this work, he also offers two other pieces of light “sculpture” that sit alone, each in its own room. As you sit and watch the pieces, they gradually morph from one color to the next, leaving you in almost a trance like state as you watch the pieces glow.
What we have not seen before were plaster concept models of light spaces that Turrell has designed. It was an amazing intimate experience to see his world miniaturized and up close and personal.
So for those of you living in the LA basin, we highly recommend that you check out the exhibition. You have time. It will be going on until 5/17/08. But be sure to mark it on your calendar as it is something not to be missed. Click HERE to find out more.
