Big Ideas (Don’t Get Any)….but James Houston did! June 20, 2008

Those of you who have taken a moment to read our “About” page will know that we over here at Silent Revolution are SUPER DUPER HUGE Radiohead fans…..and as such…..we check their web site regularly just to kind of check in and find whatever inspiration there may be. Well today, we found probably one of the most inspiring and innovative videos we’ve ever seen.

Graduating art student James Houston explains his video for Radiohead’s “Nude” this way:
“Based on the lyric (and alternate title) “Big Ideas: Don’t get any” I grouped together a collection of old redundant hardware, and placed them in a situation where they’re trying their best to do something that they’re not exactly designed to do, and not quite getting there.”

Ummmm…..can you say super genius!!! No joke. Watch the video! We’ve already watched the video six times and it gets better with each viewing. Wish we could buy his reinterpreted track on itunes!!

The Simple yet Luscious Artwork of Eric Feng June 17, 2008

Upon a recent trip to our most favorite music/book store here in Long Beach – Fingerprints – our lazy Sunday afternoon was made the moment we stumbled across a book of illustrations called “Fevoltuion” by Eric Feng.

Before writing this post, I was thinking about how to describe his work, and I found it rather difficult. His work speaks a design language to us that we weren’t even able to articulate until seeing his drawings.

Simple. Complex. Beautiful. Elegant. Sublime. Sophisticated. Intricate. and lastly – Addictive.

Such cliche words to describe such inspiring work. Our description falls short.

Let’s just say that it has been a very long time since we have been this excited about an artist. We are moved, excited and inspired but what he’s doing and we’re sure you will be too!!!

The “Dwell on Design” trade show held last week was a huge success!! We met lots of great people, received tons of wonderful feedback and were inspired beyond words! These photos are a tiny portion of the work that was featured. If we could translate the energy of any of these pieces into our bags – we would be thrilled!! The first thing we’re going to buy is DEFINITELY the red fireplace! Oh the bags that we could create with the red fireplace burning in our studio!!! Enjoy the pics! I know we did!!

We’re always digging around online looking for clothes that kind of match our design sensibility. While surfing around our guilty pleasure, ETSY, we found this FABULOUS designer: Stewart Randolph.

Not only does he create awesome clothing – but he’s also creating his own electronic music!

A friend of ours just sent us a link for a design blog based in the UK. It had a recent post about the creative offices of “Poke”.

The space is amazing and we feel happy just looking at the pics! Now if we can only figure out to translate the look of Poke’s office into a bag…… Thought we’d share the design bliss!

We’re super pleased to announce that we’ve been chosen to participate in the upcoming “Dwell on Design 08″ Expo to be held in Los Angeles at the LA Convention Center. The expo will happen from June 5th – 8th.

Spreading the Revolution – Russian Style! May 29, 2008

When you don’t see a recent posting from us – that’s a good thing! That means we’ve been busy!!

But we couldn’t help but sit down and write a quick note because we’re super excited to share with you the fact that we’re now in RUSSIA!! It’s so hard to believe and so far away – but our bags arrived by ship to the “Boom Boom Room” this week – and we just think it’s really cool!!

The lovely people at the BBR sent us some great pics of their stores! Why can’t we find stores as cool as these here in LA?! Oh well, I guess a trip to the USSR is in order!

Out of all the email lists and newsletters we subscribe to, we honestly probably don’t read many of them. But the one that we read from top to bottom – and actually SAVE every time we get it – is from a great online hipster city guide called “UNSCENE – The Urban Navigator”.

What makes them so great is that they feature the best art shows, restaurants, stores, etc. for most major metropolitan cities in the US. So you can monitor all the goings on in NY, LA, SF, etc from a simple email in your inbox.

Their “newsletter” (or guides) come out bi-weekly and they are well worth signing up for!

A company by the name of “Moi New York” has created one of the most amazing pieces of jewelry we’ve ever come across!! They have managed to merge sleek design and LIGHTING into a beautiful necklace that they’ve simply named “Moi”. Here’s how they describe this necklace on their web site:
